Something the "Watchtower" left out
by Doug Mason inthe october 1, 2011 watchtower article when was ancient jerusalem destroyed?
includes the following statement.. .
there is also strong evidence from cuneiform documents that prior to the reign of nabopolassar (the first king of the neo-babylonian period), another king (ashuretel-ilani) ruled for four years in babylonia.

From the Leo Depuydt reference (underlined section quoted in WT).
Page 105
A. Is the Canon True
"It is assumed here that the Canon is true. No one has, to my knowledge, refuted any aspect of the Canon on good grounds. On the other hand, to demonstrate the Canon's accuracy positively would not be easy. In the vast network of facts and inferences making up first millenium BCE chronology, the correctness of the Canon is at certain crucial junctures simply accepted as an axiom. To locate those junctures would be no small feat. It has long been known that the Canon is astronomically reliable. Observations dated according to it can all be authenticated. But this does not automatically mean that it is historically dependable."
Page 106 - context of quote after discussing matching a date of an eclipse on 16 July 523.
"The fact that this Greco-Egyptian date from the Almagest, which dates according to the Canon, can be matched with Babylonian date in a Babylonian document adds little for the astronomer, but a great deal for the historian. It does much to guarantee that the portion of the Canon from the Persian period onward is reliable. As regards the earlier rulers, the Canon would need to be compared with the cuneiform record on a reign by reign basis, considering all the dates in the literary and non-literary sources, to establish if, and where, the Canon conflicts whith cuneifrom sources. Agreement seems to be the rule, but this would have to be confirmed".
Has anyone been able to find a full copy of the reference containing the Christopher Walker quote?

Looking forward to some analysis on this article. Initial observations:
- Willing to use clay tablet BM 33066 to support date of Cyrus' death, even though it contains 'some errors' and relies on astronomical positions. No mention of VAT 4956 that provides observations from Nebuchadnezzar's 37th year / 18th regnal year in 587/6 B.C.E, exactly in the same year as does Ptolemy's Canon.
- No mention of Tyre's 70 years or why they are treated differently. " It must occur in that day that Tyre must be forgotten seventy years, the same as the days of one king.” (Isaiah 23:15a) According to the Isaiah book , "the island-city of Tyre is not subject to Babylon for a full 70 years, since the Babylonian Empire falls in 539 B.C.E. Evidently, the 70 years represents the period of Babylonia’s greatest domination—when the Babylonian royal dynasty boasts of having lifted its throne even above “the stars of God."
- Josephus is quoted as saying Amel-Marduk ruled for 18 years. This was the length he gave in Antiquties of the Jews. However, in his final book (Against Appion), he gave the length as 2 years, as per Berossus.

Are there jw 'safehouses'?
by Holey_Cheeses*King_of_the juice. inperhaps a member can provide some details regarding this matter.. my wife mentioned to me this evening that one of her younger sisters who is sort of close to the jw parents said that her parents had 'let the cat out of the bag' by stating that their house is a designated safe house in the event of a catastrophe (i assume this would be termed a natural disaster as opposed to a great trib type event).. is this true of the dubs?
could it be only an australian 'thing', or is it a world wide directive of the gb?.
thanks.. cheeses.

There is a file in each congregation's records that contains what is called a 'Disaster List' which records everybody's contact details, and includes an address to which the individual has stated they would evacuate to in the event of an emergency. Maybe this is considered their 'safe house'.
But if you think this through - wouldn't a safe house for one type of emergency be anything but a safe place in another?
This list may also be perused at Circuit Overseer visit time to check on inactive / irregular members.

Hi Loz
I've got a bit of his stuff - Don't Try This At Home is the album that gets most play.
There's a song on that album called God's Footballer - it's a about the footballer (soccer) named Peter Knowles who gave up a professional career with Wolverhampton Wanderers to become a Witness. Knowle's life story is in the Awake 8 November 1979.

Were you Stalked or Chased After Once you Exited the JW's by Elders ?
by flipper ini tried to fade off the map by moving 30 miles initially in 2004 after i exited in late 2003 .
the first several years they didn't bother me.
i ran into a elder from my former congregation in late 2005 in an antique store - he tried telling me i was wrong for stopping attending meetings.

Thanks for the welcome wobble and flipper. Having maintained a low profile within the congregation and socially before the fade has been to our advantage, as we are obviously not perceived as a threat as would be the case with those who had been prominent. After some initial upheaval, we still have normal contact with our respective families. Having read of the experiences of others, I know that so far we have been lucky but need to still be careful.

Hi everybody
Would just like to pass on our experience over the past couple of years. It’s been more than 2 years since we last attended a meeting.
It was more than 12 months before an elder called by unannounced for a friendly doorstop chat that lasted all of 5 minutes. At no time have I been ‘invited’ to meet with the elders. On the one hand, this has assisted our fade, but on the other it’s shown how little they really cared about us.
I think it’s a case of the elders being so pre-occupied with their own personal circumstances, in addition to the routine congregational tasks leaving no time to shepherd / harass those that leave quietly and do not seem to be making waves.
It’s now got to the point where the knock on the door is more likely to come from an unwitting publisher working the territory than an elder.
